20+ Years Experience
The Real Mold Guy represents the growth and development of a painting and remodeling business begun in Alaska in 1988 to supplement his income during the off-season of his professional sports career. After retiring from professional rodeo, George settled in Montana and founded One Good Painter, also a residential and commercial painting and remodeling company.
Over the years customer requests for mold remediation began to surface and we began to research industry standards for mold remediation. Our year-end review confirmed what we suspected: Our business was changing from painting and remodeling to mold remediation with the demolition and reconstruction that accompanies it. With this in mind, and to better reflect our scope of the services, we changed the name of our company to Big Sky Environmental Solutions.
Achieving Industry Recognition
To gauge George’s knowledge of construction and mold remediation with the rest of the industry, we applied for the toughest certification available: the American Indoor Air Quality Council’s (now the ACAC) Certified Microbial Remediation Supervisor (CMRS) designation. George attended extensive field and classroom training, completed the coursework, and passed the certification exam with flying colors. After the ACAC certification board verified his training, exam score, ten years of construction experience and five years of mold remediation experience, George was awarded the CMRS designation.
The CMRS designation is recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the State of Florida and is accredited by the Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB). Both George and Amy regularly attend continuing education courses and are members in good standing of the American Council for Accredited Certification (formerly the American Indoor Air Quality Council) and South Florida Better Business Bureau.
South Florida: Here to Stay
In August 2004, the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) issued a directive to ensure indoor air quality in healthcare facilities that had been without power for 32 hours or more or had a water intrusion during the recent hurricanes. The directive specified the CMRS designation as the primary qualification to do remediation in health care facilities in the State of Florida.
Shortly thereafter, George was called to Florida by insurance adjusters who had heard of our work for adjusters in Montana. Our market research confirmed that Florida’s mold problem, although brought to media attention by the 2004 hurricanes, is a chronic problem that would continue indefinitely. These facts prompted us to move Big Sky Environmental Solutions to Florida and incorporate it as a Limited Liability Company in May 2005.
After years of customers referring to George as “the Real mold guy” we made it official. In March 2012 we filed the fictitious name with the State of Florida and adopted the moniker the Real Mold Guy!
Twelve years and nearly 1500 satisfied customers later, the Real Mold Guy! is known throughout Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and Iowa. George continues to give educational seminars to adults struggling with asthma, COPD, and chronic other respiratory ailments. He was also a featured speaker at the American Lung Association’s 2006 Inhale-Exhale-Set Sail fundraiser in West Palm Beach. In 2008 George ventured to Iowa to help residents and business owners recover from the severe flooding in Cedar Rapids. He is credited by Edge Business Magazine with helping reopen the first restaurant in Cedar Rapids after the devastating floods. In 2010 George became a Certified Renovator under the US EPA’s Lead Repair Renovation and Restoration Law. Also in 2010, he became one of the first mold remediators licensed under the new Florida Mold Law. In 2012 Big Sky Environmental Solutions LLC was credited with making safe the home of an elderly man through the Palm Beach Post’s 2011-2012 Season to Share program. George and Amy were featured on the front page of the
April 9, 2012, Palm Beach Post in an article touting small businesses as economic catalysts.
